AHOUACH
(PRO-101)

AHOUACH BERBER…
Found in a central and southern Moroccan Atlas Mountains, it is a Berber rhythmic collective dance of the villagers, playing binders, a circular goatskin instrument. A man called Raiss leads the village men who are also playing binders, drums and sometimes flutes, while around a fire the unmarried boys and girls dance the Ahouach face to face. Holding hands, the line of dancers vibrate and shake their bodies to move the heavy Moroccan silver and amber jewelry which effects a rhythm all its own. This dance creates unity within the people and is employed for that purpose. Specific choreographic knowledge must be learned in order to be a participant in the Ahouach magi line.

JAHJOUKA
(PRO-102)

JAHJOUKA
The village of Jahjouka is located on the hilltops of Ahl-El Srif. The Master Musicians of Jahjouka have performed ceremonial music for the past ten centuries for the courts of the Kings of Morocco.
By tradition they perform the Dance of the Boujeloud considered to be the mythological god Pan symbolized by the goat half man legend.
Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones produced an album titled "The Flute of Pan." In 1967, the music of Jahjouka was introduced to the world, thanks to the influence of American author Paul Bowles who spent many creative years living in Morocco

GNAWA
(PRO-103)

GNAWA DANCE…
This is a ritual dance of Sufi sects descended from Ghanaian and Senegalese immigrants. Each rhythm has many symbolic meanings from healing powers to exorcism. A specific color is worn for each dance to evoke the spirits for the ceremony, Hadra, in which the spirits are brought to the earth from another ethereal world. Dancers wear plain white robes and black hats heavily encrusted with cowry shells and beadwork, magic talismans and amulets. Standing in a row or circle, the Gnawi keep rhythm with a huge double-ended drum played with curved sticks. Others keep the hypnotic beat with heavy metal clappers, Karkabas, as single dancers execute acrobatic dancing.

GUEDRA…
(PRO-104)

GUEDRA…
Dance of the Sahara Blue People, semi-nomads who live on the edge of the great wasteland on Morocco’s southern frontier. A row of men in blue or white gondoras and black turbans set up the heavy drumbeat while women swathed in blue, black hair piled high, laden with silver jewelry and cowry shell headpieces, clap to the rhythm and B’Sharra, the grand dame of the Guedra, salutes the sand, the sky and the wind, rocking her body, opening her arms to embrace the vastness of the desert, moving hands and fingers in delicate symbols of love, peace and benediction.

MOROCCO
(PRO-105)

SCHIKATT…
Popular erotic dance of Moroccan women. Many movements have roots in Danse Orientale (belly dance); however, the dance is uniquely Moroccan in spirit and energy. It is this combination of Arabic influence and Berber folkloric, which gave birth to the schikatt dance. Costuming also differs as dancers wear layers of kaftans covering the body from neck to toes and are richly decorated with jewelry. The dancers sing, play instruments (cymbals and binders) or perform hand clapping while dancing. Unique to this dance is a special footwork called rakza, in which the dancers stamp rhythmic patterns with bare feet for a flamenco effect.
